Hummers and Hybrids

The Hummer is the bane of the greens’ existence. It is big and loud, so it makes an easy target for those so keen on reducing greenhouse gas emissions that they would, if they had their way, force all Americans to drive Ford Fiestas.

So it should surprise the enviros that the new H3 gets basically the same gas mileage as….a hybrid. That’s right. The H3 gets 20 mpg, just 2 mpg less than the new Lexus Luxury LS Hybrid 08 sedan, whose engineers used hybrid technology not to make the car more fuel efficient, but bigger and louder.

  1. As a former Ford Festiva driver–high school was a cruel joke for me–I can say that despite the jeers of other students, it was a very nice car to drive. It had surprisingly good acceleration for a 4 cylinder car and I regularly went a week and a half without refilling its tiny gas tank. I regularly calculated my gas mileage, which was usually above 35mpg, and that’s city driving! Many of the BS hybrids can’t compete with my sweet red Festiva that I believe is still being driven by the fellow my dad sold it to. I’d take that over a Prius (with its horribly polluting batteries that go dead in a few year) any day.
