Richard Morrison could yesterday report that FDA had approved meat from cloned animals for human consumption. USDA is evidently not in agreement, although approval for human consumption is a bit outside of the scope of their work.

It might be confusing for Europeans that two regulatory agencies can disagree like that, but personally I am quite happy with this state of affairs. The fact that the U.S. government is so decentralized is an inefficiency that makes the regulation of our lives less invasive. Inefficient governments are good for citizens.

The Europeans are in agreement with USDA, although I cannot see any scientific reason for why either regulatory agency would think meat from cloned animals should be any less safe than meat from bred animals, which is the current state of affairs to a large degree.
