Re: Virginia Tax Increase Scam

I find it ironic for Virginia State Delegate Dave Albo to decry businesses being “scammed,” when he has built a reputation for  pushing grossly punitive aggressive driving and DUI laws at the same time that his law firm specializes in, among other things, defending DUI cases.

I disagree with the above criticism. The Virginia DUI laws are basically sensible. The aggressive driving laws are, too, with the exception of certain aspects of the so-called “abuser fees,” which the delegate criticized above (who was merely one of several legislators who pushed the fees) was not, for the most part, responsible for. The worst aspect of the fees — their discriminatory application to only in-state drivers — was dictated by the governor, who modified the bill passed by the legislature, not the delegates. It’s easy to forget that the governor himself suggested similar abuser fees within days of taking office, although the legislature can be faulted for defining the range of offenses covered by the fees a bit too broadly.
