Ars reports that video game sales are way up – and that GTA IV took the top spot. Look for Jack Thompson to get up in arms about the new numbers – after his ten-year disbarment. But, to the rest of us, the sales figures are just a further sign that gaming is moving into the mainstream. No longer can out-of-touch legislators claim that games are just childish amusement that only appeal to a small segment of the population. In addition to being entertainment, social, and even fitness tools, video games also spur technological innovation, as my colleague Ryan Lynch demonstrated yesterday by drooling over a €4,000 supercomputer created from game technology. I hope governments let this dynamic industry grow unimpaired by ill-conceived regulation.
