Putting the Farm Bill in Perspective

Number of farms in the U.S. — about 2.1 million.

Cost of the 2008 farm bill — $300 billion over five years.

That’s nearly $150,000 per farm, at a time of high food prices.

The vast majority of the dollars in the farm bill are for subsidy programs such as food stamps, school lunches, etc. Most farmers will be lucky to see a fraction of the amount stated per farm in this post. If you are wondering why the high prices of food, I would point you to the price of gas/diesel. The food has to get to the grocery store and someone has to pay for the transport. If you want to pay lower prices, go to a farmers market & cut out the transport middle man.
