Yma Sumac, the multi-octave exotic Peruvian songstress died Saturday in Los Angeles. Her music never fit into any genre, defying all attempts at categorization. Even today, as her legend has grown, it’s hard to find imitators — quite simply, no one else can sing like her. From her unique vocalization to her mysterious Inca-goddess image, she was always an innovator. (Below is later performance of a song from her best-selling LP Voice of the Xtabay.) RIP.
