>>Post-Spill, it’s Still ‘Drill, Baby, Drill!’
Gulf Coast residents are fed up with the politicization of the Deepwater Horizon spill. As Associate Fellow Ben Lieberman writes in The New York Post, it’s quickly becoming apparent to those most affected by the spill that “the biggest threat to the Gulf region economy isn’t the spill itself but Washington’s reaction to it.” Read Lieberman’s op-ed here.

August 23, 2010: The Salmonella Egg Scare
CEI Senior Fellow Greg Conko talks about the salmonella scare that has led to the recall of 550 million eggs 22 states. He believes that the hype is overblown, and that regulators should take an incentives-based approach to food safety issues. The current command-and-control model needs reform.

>>Congress Bails Out State Teachers’ Unions
This week the House voted to funnel more federal money to public employee unions. The $10 billion “Education Jobs Fund” will be set aside to bailout state teachers’ unions, who earlier this year received $53.5 billion. Labor Policy Analyst Vincent Vernuccio slammed the bailout in his recent American Spectator op-ed, calling it “payback” for the unions’ support for Democratic candidates. Senior Counsel Hans Bader also criticized the teachers’ bailout on OpenMarket.

>>The Nation’s Worst Attorneys General
Some of the nation’s state attorneys general have been very bad indeed, reports Senior Attorney Hans Bader. In the new study, “The Nation’s Worst Attorneys General,” Bader documents cases of AGs engaging in unethical behavior, usurping legislative powers, fabricating the law, and following predatory practices in regards to private (and out-of-state) businesses. He goes on to rank the worst of the worst, a list headed up by California’s Jerry Brown and Connecticut’s Richard Blumenthal.

>>The Lady Gaga Economy
Vice President for Policy Wayne Crews, inspired by the seeming boundless demand for performances by flamboyant pop star Lady Gaga, meditates on “Say’s Law” in economics and what it has to teach us about the current recession. Wayne reminds us that the state of the economy is not the result of a general glut of overproduction – too much stuff for sale and not enough buyers – but of a relative glut in particular sectors of the economy. While there may be too many cars for sale, the demand for concerts, music videos, and merchandise from our most popular entertainers surges ahead unabated. Thus, what we need is not a general demand-side stimulus, but a retrenchment of government policies and preferences that keep the market from re-balancing itself. Tax cuts, deregulation, privatization, and the elimination of other government distortions are the strategies that will allow the U.S. economy to expand and flourish again.
